Exercising On An Empty Stomach: Eating Before Exercise

It is a common belief for many people that you will lose fat and weight if you are exercising on an empty stomach. You can definitely see the logic behind this belief.

When you do cardio work, the body uses up the energy stored in food to complete the exercises, then uses the energy you have stored in your body as fat once it has used up the food. So if you skip the food altogether, and force the body to go straight to using the stores of fat instead, surely this will give you better weight loss results?

This is an old myth, and the logic is certainly there to suggest that is should be true, but research has shown that this does not work.

In fact the studies show that those that have a small meal before exercising will lose roughly the same or even more fat than those that skipped breakfast. But how can this be true?

The answer lies in the actual workout itself – Exercising On An Empty Stomach

If you have ever partaken in exercising on an empty stomach, you will know how tough it is. It feels like hell! You have no energy to get through the workout and will be struggling for pretty much the whole time. Whereas someone that is eating before exercise will be able to work to their maximum and put a lot more into their workout.

So if you have missed a meal in order to aid fat loss, you are really shooting yourself in the foot, as your workout will be nowhere near as good as it would be, had you eaten a small meal.

Calorie burning is most effective when you are pushing yourself to the limit and doing a really intense workout. Without food, this is not possible

Exercising on an empty stomach really is an outdated principle, that research has proven does not work. Yet there are still many people that do it, and swear by it. If only they knew the truth they would be kicking themselves, because they are putting themselves through hell for no reason. In fact, they are actually harming their fat loss efforts. I highly recommend eating before exercise.

So what should you do instead of exercising on an empty stomach?

- You should be eating a small meal before you workout, that gives you both carbs and protein. At the very least you should have a couple of scoops of whey protein to get you through the exercises. Exercising on an empty stomach won’t do you any good.

- Just whey may not be enough to get you through an intense routine, especially if you are working out first thing in the morning. Think about it: You have been sleeping for 8 or 9 hours and probably didn’t eat for a couple of hours before you went to bed. So that is at least 10 or 11 hours without food. And now you want to exercise on an empty stomach? You don’t need a big meal, but you will need to get some complex carbohydrates such as oats or whole grain bread, as well as a small amount of protien.

- Wait about 35-45 minutes for the body to digest what you have eaten before you exercise.

Don’t let your performance suffer because you’re exercising on an empty stomach. Eating before exercise is important so don’t forget it, and avoid exercising on an empty stomach
